New Help for Those at Risk of Diabetes

There are 1.6 million newly diagnosed cases of type 2 diabetes each year, and that risk increases with age. Estimates suggest that 1 in 10 people over age 20 have type 2 diabetes. And nearly 1 in 4 over age 60 have it. It’s a serious and expensive illness that is also associated with heart disease risk factors, including elevated LDL cholesterol or trigylcerides.

Taking steps to reduce risk. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form, often referred to as “lifestyle diabetes” because of the many controllable factors—like healthy eating, weight management, and exercise—that can help prevent, manage, and even reverse diabetes progression. In fact, the Diabetes Prevention Program showed that diet and exercise were more effective than medication in helping delay diabetes development.

A new medical food may help. A recent subgroup analysis of type 2 diabetes patients from 2 clinical studies* suggests that a soy-based medical food (containing plant sterols and other nutrients to support insulin sensitivity) may be a helpful complement to a low-glycemic-load diet and exercise to help manage type 2 diabetes risk factors. After 12 weeks, these previously undiagnosed patients showed significant improvements vs. baseline measures for blood sugar and insulin with the medical food program. The medical food group also showed greater reductions in LDL cholesterol and triglycerides than those on just the diet and exercise alone.
